History of the Pick-Up Truck

  • Compact Pickups – simply referred to as “pickup”, it is the most common type of pickup vehicle around the world. It is designed like a small version of the two-axle truck with a cab, frame structure, and leaf spring suspension on its rear wheels.
  • Full-sized Pickup – designed to haul heavy loads, this pickup truck can carry a minimum of 1,000lbs. It can sometimes carry up to five times this weight in the rear bed. Most full-sized pickups can have a 1.2m x 2.4m bed. The most popular variant of this class are probably the ones with ½ ton ratings.
  • Muscle Trucks – over the years, high performance versions of pickup trucks have been manufactured. Some of the manufacturers that carry this line include Dodge, Holden, Ford, and General Motors.
  • Mid-sized Pickups – first introduced in 1987 by Dodge (the Dakota), this type of pick-up has become extremely popular. Its most notable feature is its ability to carry 4 ft x 8 ft sheets flat on the bed and its V6 engine.

There are many other types of pickup trucks that have been introduced both domestically and internationally. Among other notable types are the Latin American pickups, African pickups, and Coupe utilities.
