Osteopathic Medical Colleges

Osteopathic medicine requires several prerequisites including an undergraduate degree, either a BA or BS in life sciences. In addition, a prospective student needs to take and pass the MCAT or Medical College Admission Test. The education is challenging and rigorous and will include curriculum lasting four years, as well as two years of clinical training. Residencies also exist for students to pursue further specialization in osteopathic medicine. This is a basic overview of the required work, but osteopathic medicine is more than just classes and clinical trials.

Osteopathic medicine is a hands-on, or manual, medicine. It is guided by the philosophy of treating the patient as a whole and not just the ailment. They approach medicine from a mindset that every part of the body is connected and interdependent upon each other. If an ailment of the back is present they not only look at the back, but connected areas such as nerves connecting the hips and lower extremities of the body, and the upper back and torso. The idea of osteopathic medicine came from its founder who believed that most medicines of his day were not useful and in fact harmful. He sought to bring a more grounded approach to medicine by treating the entire patient as mentioned above.

A student of osteopathic medicine not only needs to understand biology, chemistry, and differential diagnosis, but the mechanics and connectivity of the body—how the body uses its individual systems independently and in tandem is pinnacle to osteopathic doctors. Training and instruction is the only way to obtain the experience in using manual medicine and hands-on training is part of every osteopathic doctor's education. Certifications can come from two different entities; for manual medicine by the American Academy of Osteopathy and for field of cranial osteopathy by the Cranial Academy.
