Children and Medical Problems

Children and teens with medical problems tend to have a lower school attendance than their healthy classmates. This can understandably take a toll on their grade point average and their ability to form healthy friendships with their schoolmates. However, medical problems don’t have to hinder your child in their reach to achieve their fullest academic potential. Luckily, there are effective and simple ways to tackle your child’s medical problems so they can lead the typical life of a child or teenager.

Dealing with Allergies

If provoked, food allergies can have one of the most violent allergic reactions. But surprisingly, they are the easiest type of allergy to avoid. Simply educate your child on the foods that are off limits to them and thoroughly explain the potential consequences. If your son or daughter is in their teens, it will be much easier to avoid slip ups, simply because their level of comprehension is higher. But, young children can be trained to effectively avoid the foods they are allergic to. If your child has environmental allergies and both their home and educational center are breeding grounds of these allergens, it is near impossibly to naturally avoid these allergies. The only effective way to ward off these types of allergens is through a doctor prescribed medication or an over the counter nasal spray.

Dealing with Aches

If your child suffers from constant aches in particular regions of the body, the first step is to visit a doctor in order to further diagnose the issue. If your doctor gives you medication to tame the aches, you are home free. However, if the doctor categorizes the aches as growing pains, you will have to rely on over the counter medications. The best over the counter medications that counteract the aches and pains are topical creams that are used for arthritis relief, such as Tiger Balm, Bengay, Aspercrème, and Icy Hot. Children and teens with severe aches and pains may also benefit from a warm therapeutic bath before bed and a heating pad.

Dealing with ADHD

Children and teens who suffer from ADHD have an abundance of misplaced energy. The simplest way to calm someone with ADHD, aside from medication, is to give them an outlet for their energy. If you are the parent of a young child with ADHD, why not set up a three legged race with their siblings or mom and dad? If you are the parent of a teen with ADHD, why not set up a trampoline in the backyard? All teens love trampolines and it is a good way for your teen to burn off some extra calories and energy. If you are the parent of a sports inclined son, put his energy to a good use. Set him up in sports that teach discipline, such as his school’s basketball or lacrosse team. An out of school activity that teaches discipline and will still burn off loads of energy is Karate.

Another important factor that will contribute to their energy level is their diet. Yes, all kids love sugary treats but they are not a necessity. No matter how much they beg, do not give them that second candy bar or bag of chips. The foods that you need to avoid are: pizza, candied yams, soda, artificial juice, candy, chips, and any treats that you suspect will have the bouncing off of the wall within minutes.
