Guide to the Brain and Nervous System
Did you know that even though your brain controls everything your body does, the average adult brain only weighs three pounds? Not very big is it? Your brain is protected by your cranium, which is made up of 8 bones at the top of your head. These bones, plus 14 smaller bones in your face make up your whole skull and serve the purpose of protecting your brain from any injuries.Although, it's fairly small in size your brain does a lot of work. Can you name some of the functions of the brain? Your brain:
- Lets you know when you're hungry and thirsty
- Helps you think
- Controls your laughter
- Helps you to hear
- Allows you to speak and taste things
- Helps you to see
The brain and your spinal cord make up your central nervous system. Your central nervous system is what controls every movement your body makes. Try this- move your fingers. Your central nervous system works so fast that you don't even have to stop and think about. You simply make your fingers move, but did you know that in order for your fingers to move, a signal is sent to your brain and back to your fingers. It happens so quick, you don't even realize it. What else does your central nervous system control? You know that the central nervous system controls your movements, but it's also what allows you to feel things like pain or if something is hot or cold. Sometimes people have medical problems that are centered around their nervous system. This causes random pain throughout their body and seeing a chiropractor can help resolve the problem.
Working together your brain and spinal cord control everything your body does. Did you know that your brain doesn't feel pain? That seems strange since the most common medical complaint is the headache, right? In fact when you have a headache, it's not your brain that is hurting. A headache is a pain that is in your head, near your brain. The sensation of pain is picked up by the nerve endings close to your brain, but the pain is never actually felt by your brain. Nerves feel pain anywhere in your body and send a signal to your brain for you to acknowledge it.
One popular myth about the brain is that humans only use 10 percent of their brain. Some people think that if we used 100 percent of our brains we would have some sort of super power like being able to see the future. However, that is only a myth. In fact humans do use 100 percent of our brains. It divided into different sections. Each section has different jobs. For example, there is a section that helps our eyes to see, one that helps us think, and other sections that help us do other things. What do you think the three main parts of the brain do?
Your brain is one of the most important parts of your body, therefore it's important to take care of it. How do you take care of your brain though? You simply sleep! Sleep is a process your body needs to refresh. The entire time you sleep your body is resting, but your brain is still working away. Your dreams are all controlled by your brain. Did you know you dream every night? How often can you actually remember your dreams? Keeping a dream journal is a great way to find out, give it a try!
