Dr. Jonathan Wald | From the time he was a child, Dr. Jonathan Wald has always been an animal lover. His array of pets, from dogs to reptiles, was a sure indicator of what his future career would be. It was a passion that carried him through eight years of intensive study at the University of Florida, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Neurobiology and in 1984 was awarded a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Originally a native of New York, South Florida's tropical weather and friendly residents prompted Dr. Wald to relocate and open his own animal hospital here.
Since founding Central Broward Animal Hospital in 1987, Dr. Wald has steadily grown the practice into one of the county's most trusted animal care centers. Counted among his preferred fields of veterinary study are dermatology and internal medicine.
Dr. Wald's family also shares his passion for animal care. His wife Melissa can sometimes be found at the hospital assisting with duties while their two daughters, Danielle and Lindsay, enjoy watching firsthand how the doctors and nurses care for the animals. Petting and playing with the boarders are a bonus for them. Having the unique opportunity to spend time with so many animals, the girls would also like to be veterinarians when they grow up, just like dad. Rounding out the Wald family are two four-legged members, Madison and Cody. These sibling Golden Retrievers are always on hand to eagerly greet clients at Central Broward Animal Hospital.
Dr. Wald can often be found in his off hours jogging or hiking with his wife, attending his daughters' school and sports functions or playing golf with the whole family. |
Dr. Janeen Lezcano | Originally from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Dr. Janeen Lezcano cites her childhood love and devotion for animals as the primary reason she became a veterinarian. A 1992 graduate of the University of Florida, Dr. Lezcano earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology. She then entered into the University of Florida's School of Veterinary Medicine where, in 1996, she earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. After working several years as an associate veterinarian at an area animal clinic, Dr. Lezcano joined Central Broward Animal Hospital in February 2002. She is now the hospital's senior associate veterinarian and takes particular interest in internal medicine and dermatology.
Dr. Lezcano is married to her college sweetheart, Carlos, the Deputy District Manager with the Department of Hotels and Restaurants. The couple has two children; baseball player Carlos and ballerina Natalie. Besides keeping busy raising a family and practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Lezcano loves scrapbooking and traveling with her family.
Being biligual in both Spanish and english, Dr. Lezcano is able to completely assist families in either language. |
Dr. Thora Powers | Dr. Powers was born in Little Rock, Arkansas to a father in the marine corps, and was raised in various locales including Iceland and Hawaii.
Dr. Powers has been an associate veterinarian at Central Broward Animal Hospital since June 2006. A 2002 graduate of the University of Florida, Dr. Powers earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in Animal Science plus Microbiology and Cell Science. She continued her education at the University of Florida, earning her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Dr. Powers' professional interest in clinical pathology is closely related to her undergraduate degree; she is fascinated by how illnesses can be fought on the cellular level.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Powers attends to her own animal family. They include Carlos, a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix, and two domestic long-haired cats, Cinnamon and T-Bone. Her non-animal related hobbies include reading, cooking and baking. |
Dr. Lara Oms | Dr. Lara Oms was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is the daughter of two doctors, an ophthalmologist and a pediatrician. While she enjoyed human medicine, a love of animals, dating back to childhood, combined with her experience working in an animal hospital, helped her decide to pursue a career as a veterinarian. Beginning her extensive collegiate education at American University in Washington, D.C., Dr. Ohms graduated in 1996 with Bachelor of Science Degrees in Biology and Animal Sciences. She continued her veterinary studies at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, obtaining her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2002. Prior to joining Central Broward Animal Hospital as an associate veterinarian in January 2004, Dr. Ohms completed an internship in medicine and surgery at Purdue University.
Dr. Oms has two cats, Minina and Piccolina. While in veterinary school she adopted Minina from a shelter and later she rescued Piccolina after finding her in a trash can! She loves both her cats dearly, but Minina has a special place in her heart for being her companion throughout veterinary school.
One of Dr. Oms' hobbies is traveling, especially to places where she can experience different cultures. She also loves reading, going to the beach and spending time with family members.
Being bilingual in both English and Spanish, Dr. Ohms is able to completely assist families in either language. |
