When your veterinarian feels that your pet needs a more extensive evaluation, he may refer you to one of our veterinary specialists. As a general practice veterinarian, it is difficult to have the depth of knowledge in the many areas of veterinary practice. So when your pets condition is difficult to diagnose, we are here to help.
Our staff provides unequaled patient care whether your pet is coming for an outpatient exam or to be hospitalized overnight. Our staff of veterinary technicians, are highly trained and compassionate professionals. Your pet is their primary focus. We provide in-service continuing education programs to keep their skills finely tuned.
VETMED Consultants offers a multidisciplinary veterinary referral service to Arizona veterinarians and their clients. We have specialists in cardiology, internal medicine, radiology, surgery and dentistry. Our multidisciplinary approach allows for continuity of care which enables optimal patient assessment and treatment. We also provide 24-hour care for our patients that need to be hospitalized.
Our philosophy is to provide our clinicians with state-of-the-art equipment allowing them to obtain the most accurate diagnostic information available today. A prime example is our digital radiography and ultrasound capability that allows for image archival and transmission of those images when necessary to veterinary experts around the country.
We also provide CT scan and MRI services for our patients through a relationship with Medical Imaging North, a state of the art human imaging facility located nearby.
 Dr. T. Arch Robertson, D.V.M. | T. Arch Robertson, DVM, is the lead ultrasonographer and founder of VETMED Consultants. Dr. Robertson began performing ultrasounds on dogs and cats in the 1980s at a time when ultrasound technology was virtually non-existent in private veterinary practices. At that time, most veterinary schools did not even offer ultrasound and there were minimal publications written on the subject.
Dr. T. Arch Robertson began teaching himself veterinary ultrasound at his former small animal practice, East Valley Veterinary Hospital in Mesa, Arizona. He quickly realized the non-invasive nature of this technology and began began offering his services to other veterinary practices. Dr. Robertson became the first veterinarian to offer mobile ultrasound services in Arizona. After a decade of pioneering work in this burgeoning field, he founded VETMED Consultants in 1995.
Dr. T. Arch Robertson earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University Veterinary School in 1983. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University in 1978. He is a member of the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
The Phoenix Zoo, World Wildlife Zoo and Southwest Wildlife, as well as numerous rescue organizations, are the grateful recipients of Dr. T. Arch Robertson’s philanthropy as he has generously donated his time performing ultrasound for these organizations.
Dr. Robertson enjoys hiking, biking, tennis and playing ball with his Lab, Duncan. He is the devoted father of Kimberly, Greg and Cole.

 Dr. Ale Aguirre, D.V.M., DACVIM | Ale Aguirre, DVM, DACVIM, is a internal medicine specialist. As a specialist, he sees patients with chronic diseases or diseases that are difficult to diagnose. In order to achieve the most accurate diagnosis, he utilizes specialized equipment including CT scans, MRI, interventional radiology, laparoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound, and radiology.
Dr. Aguirre earned his undergraduate degrees in Biology and Anthropology at Stanford University in California. He attended veterinary school at Cornell University in New York. After earning his doctorate of veterinary medicine, Dr. Aguirre spent several years pursuing advanced training to become the specialist that he is today. He completed an internship at the University of Missouri in small animal internal medicine and surgery. He then completed a residency at Cornell University in internal medicine. Dr. Aguirre spent several years practicing internal medicine in New Jersey prior to joining VETMED Consultants in 2007.
In July 2007, Dr. Aguirre published an article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association about gallbladder disease in Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties). Dr. Aguirre found that Shelties are predisposed to developing gallbladder mucocoeles, a newly recognized disease in which the gallbladder fills with mucous and is at risk for rupturing. Dr. Aguirre recently wrote a chapter for the leading Veterinary Internal Medicine Textbook on liver disease in dogs and cats. He has served as a lecturer for local Arizona veterinary conference.
When not performing internal medicine, Dr. Aguirre enjoys spending time helping injured wildlife, doing photography, hiking, and playing with his many pets including two beagles, several tortoises and birds.

 Dr. Daniel B. Guastella, D.V.M. | Daniel Guastella, DVM, is residency trained in soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery. Dr. Daniel Guastella earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine and molecular biology from the Florida Institute of Technology and a doctorate of veterinary medicine from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
To focus on soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery, Dr. Guastella spent four additional years studying small animal medicine and surgery. He completed an internship at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and a residency at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey. He joined the VETMED Consultants team in July 2008.
Dr. Guastella has participated in research involving:
Glucosamine and chondroitin in canine osteoarthritis;
A device for augmentation of avascular meniscal healing;
Antioxidants in Parkinson’s Disease;
Investigation of protective mechanisms in several models of cerebral ischemia (stroke); and
Cloning techniques.
He has published articles in Veterinary and Comparative Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Journal of Neuroscience, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Guastella is a member of the American Veterinary Medical association and the Veterinary Orthopedic Society. His particular areas of interest include arthroscopy, minimally invasive fracture repair, angular limb deformity correction, and canine cruciate ligament disease.
In his free time Dr. Guastella enjoys spending time with his pets. He also enjoys many outdoor activities including fishing and hiking. He is a devoted father to one daughter.

 Dr. Matt Miller, D.V.M., DACVIM | Matt Miller, DVM, DACVIM, received his doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University in 1984 and his Masters of Science degree from the same university in 1993. He completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Group from 1984-1985 and a cardiology residency at the Ohio State University from 1985-1988.
Dr. Miller became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) in 1988. He is currently Professor of Cardiology in The Department of Small Animal Veterinary Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. He is a Charter Fellow of the Michael E. DeBakey Institute of Comparative Cardiovascular Science and Biomedical Devices, and a staff cardiologist for the Texas Veterinary Medical Center.
Once a month, Dr. Miller sees patients at VETMED Consultants to provide cardiology consultaitons for dogs and cats.

 Dr. Kenneth F. Lyon, D.V.M., Dipl. AVDC, FAVD | Kenneth Lyon, D.V.M., Dipl. AVDC, FAVD, is a 1980 graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) and a 1974 graduate of the University of Arizona (B.S. Agriculture - Animal Health Science).
As a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College since 1989, Dr. Lyon is recognized as a board-certified specialist in veterinary dentistry. He is internationally recognized as an authority on feline dental and oral disease. Dr. Lyon is a Charter Fellow of the international Academy of Veterinary Dentistry and is the Past President of the Academy. In 1993, he received the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Practitioner Research Award given in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in veterinary medical research by a practicing veterinarian for his study of feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions. In 1999, he received the first annual "Fellow of the Year" Award from the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry for his work.
Dr. Lyon has served on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, the American Veterinary Dental Society, and the American Veterinary Dental College. He is a member of the board of reviewers for the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) and the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry from 1991 until 1995. Dr. Lyon has authored numerous journal publications and book chapters, and maintains a busy lecturing schedule.
Dr. Lyon maintains a specialty veterinary dental practice in Tucson at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialists. He established Arizona Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in 2004 as a state-of-the-art dentistry facility in Gilbert, Arizona, and has now expanded his practice to VETMED Consultants to more conveniently serve clients residing in the north Valley.

 Dr. Peter D. Bates, D.V.M. | Dr. Peter Bates is a 1971 graduate of Michigan State University (D.V.M.) who moved to the Valley in 1972. His post-doctoral studies included computer science at Arizona State University and independent research in cardiovascular pharmacology through the University of Arizona.
Following seven years in private and institutional practice, he was invited to join the staff at St. Luke's Medical Center as Director of Medical Research. He remained there for ten years, serving as a member of the Medical Staff Research Committee and as chairman of the Technology Assessment Committee in addition to participating in independent and collaborative research projects.
After fifteen years, Dr. Bates left the world of research in 1993 to return to full time clinical practice. He began his dentistry residency with Arizona Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in January, 2004. His practice is now limited to dentistry and oral surgery in dogs and cats. Clinical interests include computer applications in veterinary dentistry, oral microsurgery and micro-dentistry.

 Dr. Tiffany Boisjolie, DVM | Tiffany Boisjolie, DVM, was born in Minnesota and moved to Phoenix when she was just one year old. She grew up in Phoenix and after graduating from Xavier College Preparatory, attended The University of Arizona to obtain her undergraduate degree.
For her first three years of veterinary school, Doctor Boisjolie attended Ross University on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. In 2001, Doctor Boisjolie moved back to the states, where she completed her senior year at the University of Minnesota.
After graduation, Dr. Boisjolie moved to Chicago to complete a rotating internship at VCA Berwyn and VCA Franklin Park. She then spent a year at the Chicago Veterinary Kidney Center doing a fellowship in renal medicine. In 2004, Doctor Boisjolie moved back to the Valley and has been in private practice here since.
In her free time, she enjoys hiking, swimming, traveling, and spending time with her many animals.
