Las Vegas
The Rock n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon was first held in 1967 and had been organized by Al Boka from 1983 to 2005, when Chicago-based Devine Racing bought the marathon. The takeover also came with a shift in the date of the marathon from January to December. In 2009, the Competitor Group bought the Las Vegas Marathon and added the all-American Strip to the course. The Rock n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon is only one of the rare times the Strip is closed to traffic. The 2009 course starts at the parking lot of the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino and ends in Las Vegas’ Sunset Park.

Chicago
The Chicago Marathon is placed with the Boston and New York Marathons in the five World Marathon Majors. It is a very popular event partly because of its sponsors who award huge prize money to encourage elite runners and partly because of its flat and fast course that is very susceptible to record-setting. The course runs through 29 diverse Chicago neighborhoods and historic and cultural landmarks. It is held annually in the month of October and while there is no qualifying time for its participants, the Chicago Marathon only times runners who finish in 6 ½ hours.

In 1990, the city of Atlanta won the bid for the Centennial Olympics and the Atlanta Track Club developed an Olympic Marathon Course separate from the downtown course that was run in the Atlanta Marathon. In 1997, the Atlanta Marathon adopted 90% of the Olympic loop course, where it starts outside Turner Field, turns north to Piedmont then south to Peachtree, then back downtown to the finish line, also located outside Turner Field.
