Leave It To Beaver

Premiering in 1957, the television show Leave it to Beaver carries with it the image of the picture-perfect nuclear family. Each character in the show played a role in maintaining its popularity with weekly viewers. While parents Ward and June Cleaver tried to keep order in their household, their son Beaver had a knack for getting himself mixed up in mischief. Meanwhile Wally, Beaver's brother, always tried to do the honest and right thing. The combination of the personalities in this typical family drew the interest of television viewers. The scrapes that Beaver found himself in on a weekly basis were humorous because the stories were seen from his point of view. Beaver's way of looking at things was always worth a chuckle.

It has been over fifty years since Leave it to Beaver premiered on television and it is still popular with viewers today. One of the main reasons it's loved is for the Cleaver family itself. Its members genuinely care about the well-being of one another. In this age of divorces and splintered families it's refreshing to see a family, even a fictional one, that is intact and solid. Another reason for the show's popularity is the simplicity of the time in which it takes place. This is especially reflected in the children's lives. The sons participate in sports, play with friends in the neighborhood, belong to clubs at school and are involved in other wholesome activities. Technology hasn't entered the lives of kids and teenagers yet. Television repair was the extent of technological challenges.

Jerry Mathers headed the cast as Beaver Cleaver in Leave it to Beaver. While still a young child he modeled and became an actor. He took some parts in a few films but it wasn't until Leave it to Beaver that his name became well-known to the public. Since the show, he's served in the military and pursued work in real estate. He has also continued his acting.

The mother role of June Cleaver in Leave it to Beaver was played by Barbara Billingsley. Hugh Beaumont played the part of the father, Ward Cleaver, in Leave it to Beaver. In the 1940s he ventured into film work and won the parts of a variety of characters. With the introduction of television Hugh Beaumont found a new place to nurture his acting skills. His persistence in the acting world paid off when he won the role of Ward Cleaver and cemented a place for himself in television history. After the show ended in the early 1960s, Hugh Beaumont continued to act on television in guest roles and also took some parts in plays. When his health began to decline in his early sixties, Hugh Beaumont left his acting work. He died in 1982.

The role of Wally Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver was taken by actor Tony Dow. Dow's early ambition was not to become an actor but to participate in the Olympics as a swimmer. While in pursuit of his swimming goals, he had a meeting with a producer and won the part in an upcoming television series. Though that particular series didn't see success, the part of Wally Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver presented itself and Tony Dow accepted the role. Since the end of the show Tony Dow has acted, directed and made his mark in the art world.

Ken Osmond claimed the role of Wally Cleaver's friend, Eddie Haskell on Leave it to Beaver. The acting career of Ken Osmond began in his childhood. He gained a great deal of acting experience early on with supporting roles in several well-known films. The part of Eddie Haskell in Leave it to Beaver earned Ken Osmond recognition for his acting. After the cancellation of the show, Ken Osmond found other acting work as a guest star on various television shows. Later, he became a police officer.
