Xena The Warrior Princess

Xena: Warrior Princess was a television show that was on the air from September, 1995 to June, 2001. It was a spin-off of a popular television show called Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. The character of Xena the Warrior Princess was originally a guest star on Hercules.

She made three appearances, and they were of such great success that she eventually earned her very own show. In the first episode she is an outlaw, but by her second appearance on Hercules, good wins her over and she is on the right side of things. It wasn’t too long after her third guest appearance that the producers introduced the concept of the Xena spin-off.

Xena: Warrior Princess starred Lucy Lawless as Xena and Renee O’Connor, as her companion Gabrielle. The setting of the movie was primarily in ancient Greece, but there were other areas introduced into the setting of the movie, as well. The episodes themselves were actually filmed largely in New Zealand, although some filming locations remain confidential and sealed to this day.

The Basis of Warrior Princess Adventures

The idea behind the adventures of Xena in ancient Greece was that she was on a quest for redemption. In the beginning of her television appearances she was an outlaw, and her adventures with Gabrielle are all a type of quest to redeem herself for past misdeeds and sins by helping people and committing acts of good and kindness all over the world. The show could be melodramatic at some times. Other times it was whimsical and funny, and still other times it had a musical element to it. Fans didn’t always know what to expect with Xena.

There were a lot of familiar names on the show. The concept borrowed other names and characters from mythology around the world, and adapted them to suit the needs of the show’s story line. They even come across Homer before he becomes famous for his writings, and Gabrielle encourages his story telling. The fall of Troy is recounted in the movie, as is Caesar’s capture by rogue pirates; strangely enough, Xena is the leader of these pirates.

Xena Fans

Xena fans are still active to this day. This was one of the very first shows that let fans interact and have a say in things via internet discussions boards and websites. The Xena community online is and always has been quite active.

When the show ended in 2001, many people were saddened. Over the time span of the shows Xena and Hercules, an animated movie was released with Xena and Hercules as characters in the movie, as well as Gabrielle. There are still rumors floating around that a full-length motion picture may be in the works.

As for now, there are plenty of series companion books to satisfy Warrior Princess lovers.

Xena: Warrior Princess was a huge television success, and much of that success still reverberates today. Fans of Xena can still check her and her adventure companions out on television in many parts of the world.
