Bill Nye the Science Guy

Science is a topic that connects all human beings, and ties us together. It’s something that has captured the imagination of people for centuries, and has answered the many mysteries of animals, space, geology, and other elements of the world around us. Bill Nye, a famous television scientist, has captured the minds and hearts of kids all over the country for many years. He was born in Washington, D.C. in 1955. Originally, Nye was a mechanical engineer (he attended Cornell University) for the airplane company Boeing. Years later, he was a reoccurring character on local TV show called Seattle, Almost Live! This show is where he earned his now famous nickname, Bill Nye the Science Guy. In 1993, his television show by the very same name first aired.

This popular and educational television show explained everything from the planets and solar system to why the human body gets a cold. The show incorporated humor and learning so that kids would be entertained, while learning at the same time. The theme of the show is “science rules,” which was meant to get kids excited about science, no matter what niche they are interested in. He also explains to kids (and adults!) how to behave in a responsible manner when it comes to the environment. He is a hybrid car owner, and enjoys sharing tips about saving our environment as well as providing a good example for others. His motto is to “leave the world better than when you found it,” which means everyone should do their part to protect and preserve the natural world around us.

Bill Nye’s show aired until 1997, however he also has some new ventures. The Eyes of Nye is another show he has recently starred in and produced and is aimed more towards an adult audience. The goal is to teach people about green living, and discusses the scientific background on topics such as addiction, race, and sex. He’s also appeared as a guest appearance on several different television shows including Who Wants to be A Millionaire, Stargate Atlantis, and Numb3rs, to name a few. His face is widely recognized as the everyman’s guide to science and education. Of course, Bill Nye has done much more than just appear on television as a quirky scientist.

Nye has been credited for helping with the invention of a very small sundial that was used on the Mars Rover. He also has a patent for a ballet shoe, and other various items. He is also often consulted by government organizations, major network news departments, and science related foundations for professional advice. Often, he gives lectures at colleges and scientific organizations. He is Vice President to the Planetary Society. He once quipped that he applied to NASA to become an astronaut but his application was denied several times. In the world of science, Bill Nye the Science Guy has made a very significant impact, and his intelligence and sense of humor will always be an important part of American culture.
