A Brady Bunch Retrospective
The Brady Bunch had a lasting impression on those who watched the show when it originally aired. The show also picked up fans when it ran in syndication, which continued until 2007. At that point the show aired at least once a day somewhere in the United States.
The Show
The Brady Bunch was an ABC sitcom that ran from 1969 to 1974. Creator Sherwood Schwartz came up with the idea of the show in 1965. At the time he was well known in Hollywood for his show Gilligan’s Island and was looking for his next big idea. He devised a show called Yours and Mine based on an article he read in the local newspaper about mixed families and second marriages. He took the finished pilot script to NBC, CBS and ABC, but after all three demanded significant edits, he decided to stop progress on the show. In 1968 he brought the script back out and ABC agreed to air the show.
The plot of The Brady Bunch centered on widow Mike Brady who married Carol Martin. Schwartz always stated that Carol was divorced, though ABC didn’t want the controversy appearing on air so it was never mentioned. Each character had three children of their own, leading to a large family. Carol and her three daughters moved in with Mike and his three sons and all took the Brady name. Carol also inherited Mike’s housekeeper Alice who lived with the family and their dog Tiger.
The show experienced a revival when it was turned into two major motion pictures, which poked fun at the earnest and old-fashioned ideas of the show. It’s easy now to make fun of how serious the show took itself, which lends to the kitschy appeal of the show. Marcia’s obsession with her looks, Jan’s inferiority complex and other ideas let people laugh at the show, without feeling bad for doing so.
The Characters
