The Little Prince
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, is a French children’s novel that was published in 1943. While it is termed a French book, it was written in the United States while the author rented a home on Long Island. There are several versions of the book, and many of them contain drawings that were created by the original author.
The Little Prince is notably one of the most famous and widely translated children’s books of them all. It is currently available in more than 180 tongues and has sold more than 80 million copies since its first printing. To date, it is one of the best selling books ever printed. It has been adapted into a musical, an opera, and even a children’s cartoon on the Nickelodeon Network. Because of the simplistic yet engaging language, many students learning French use The Little Prince as a learning tool.
The Story of the Little Prince
On the surface, the Little Prince is supposed to be a simple child’s story. Many people have read further into the story, even as far as to say that there is a philosophical meaning behind the story. In the story, the narrator is marooned in a desert. Many people say that this is a sort of re-telling of the author’s own experience being stranded in the desert after a plane crash.
In the story, the narrator can draw one thing—a boa digesting an elephant. The Little Prince wants the narrator to draw him a sheep, not a boa constrictor. The narrator is unable to do that, so he draws a box and says there is a sheep inside—which seems to satisfy the Little Prince.
The story goes on to talk about the Little Prince’s home planet, or asteroid, called B612. It has three active volcanoes and a rose on it. The prince spends his whole life taking care of his little planet, pulling out all of the baobab trees that try to take root there. The story introduces several people, including The King, the Conceited Man, the Drunk, the Businessman, the Lamplighter, and the Geographer.
The story goes on for several more chapters. In the end, the boy must return to his planet. He allows a snake to bite him, as he claims that his physical body is too heavy to take with him. The story is concluded six years after the narrator has been rescued from the desert.
The Little Prince on Television
The Adventures of the Little Prince was a Japanese anime series that aired in parts of North America and Europe in the 1980s. The show eventually made it to Nickelodeon, and is now available on DVD.
