An Ode to Cheers
Cheers was an extremely popular television show that ran from 1982 to 1993. The show was set in a sports bar in Boston, and focused on the characters and relationships that transpired within its walls.It was most famous for its ensemble cast, and featured a variety of manic personalities and love triangles. The characters are perhaps the most memorable and endearing aspect of the series.
- Sam Malone was played by Ted Danson. He was the bar owner and also acted as a bar tender from time to time. He was known for his romantic escapades and had on-again-off-again relationships with both Diane and Rebecca. He used to be a former relief picture for the Boston Red Sox.
- Diane Chambers was played by Shelley Long. She was a graduate student and aspiring author who waited tables to help pay the bills. She had an on-again-off-again relationship with Sam until she left the show in 1987. She did appear in the final season of Cheers.
- Rebecca Howe was played by Kirstie Alley. She becomes the manager of Cheers for a short time after Sam sells it and before he buys it back. Sam and Rebecca also have on-again-off-again relationship throughout the time she is on the show. She joined the cast after Diane left in 1987.
- Ernie "Coach" Pantusso was played by Nicholas Colasanto. He was on the show from 1982 until he passed away in 1985. He was a bartender, but he used to be a coach and a baseball player.
- Woody Boyd was played by Woody Harrelson. He came onto the cast after Coach died and played the part of an assistant bartender. He was an aspiring actor and a politician throughout the many seasons on the show.
- Carla Tortelli was played by Rhea Perlman. She was a waitress and appeared in every episode of Cheers along with Norm and Sam. Outside of work she was a homemaker.
- Norm Peterson was played by George Wendt. He was a regular at the bar, and could usually be seen talking to Sam or Cliff. Whenever he entered the bar, people would shout his name. He was an accountant and a house painter in various seasons of the show.
- Frasier Crane was played by Kelsey Grammer. He played a customer who was also a psychiatrist. His character was a more refined then other customer at the bar. The character of Frasier spun off and created his own show Frasier that ran for several years after Cheers was finished.
- Lilith Sternin was played by Bebe Neuwirth. She was also a customer and a psychiatrist. She was married to Frasier and their relationship became one of the subplot lines throughout the show. She was very proper and cold.
- Cliff Clavin was played by John Ratzenberger. He was a mailman and the bar know-it-all. He often offered up unwelcome commentary on various incidents that took place in the bar.
