MacGyver - Modern Day Renaissance Man
Every once in a while, a show comes along that somehow manages to hook the public’s attention and keep them coming back week after week. And every once in a while, that same show becomes part of everyday culture and survive past its original airing. MacGyver is one of those shows.
MacGyver revolved around a secret agent named MacGyver who worked for the Phoenix Foundation (later in the series, his first name is revealed to be Angus). Played by Richard Dean Anderson, MacGyver was unique in that he preferred not to use violence in going after criminals. In fact, he refused to even carry a gun! Laid-back and brilliantly resourceful, MacGyver was the modern-day Renaissance Man who used unorthodox methods to capture criminals and spies. His honorable nature, intelligence, and good looks ensured that the show made an impressive impact on society.
The show debuted on September 29, 1985 and ran for an impressive seven seasons, wrapping up on May 21, 1992. Aired by ABC, each episode ran around 45 minutes. The MacGyver character became a pop culture icon with references to him still appearing even in today’s most popular shows, including The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live.
