The Muppet Page

On September 24th, 1936 in Greenville, Mississippi the man who would change the world of puppeteering forever was born. Jim Henson, born James Maury Henson is one of the worlds most famous puppeteers. Jim got his start working with puppets while still in high school when he created puppets for a saturday morning children's show that aired on WTOP-TV in Maryland. After high school Jim attended the University of Maryland. It was at this time that he was asked to create puppets for the puppet show Sam and Friends. The show was the first time Jim and his future wife, Jane Nabel, worked together. They married in 1959 and had five kids.

In 1963 Jane decided to no longer continue muppeteering in order to raise their kids. It was at this time that Henson hired Frank Oz to replace her. Henson and Oz worked together for 27 years. Oz became the voice and puppeteer of some of the world's most memorable puppet characters, including Yoda from the Star War film series.

One of the things that makes Henson's muppets stand out among the puppet crowd is his decision to create his characters using soft, pliable materials, instead of the wood that was common at the beginning of his career. It is also the lovable and unique characters he created from them. Henson gave a life and personality to his puppets and people the world over embraced them and have made them a part of pop culture history.

Henson was approached in 1969 by the Children's Television Workshop and asked if he would work for the children’s show Sesame Street. Sesame Street became a huge hit, as did the many puppets Henson created for the show. It was at this time that he also directed the short series of TV movies entitled Tales From Muppetland.

Jim Henson became one of the most well known puppeteers in the United States, winning many awards and recognitions throughout his film and production career. From Sesame Street came the much loved children’s shows Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show and Muppets Tonight!
