The Many Faces and Voices of Robin Williams
You may know him as Mork from the planet Ork, or as Mrs. Doubtfire, or from his stand-up comedy career. But no matter how you know him, one thing is certain – Robin Williams is one of the most talented individuals in entertainment history.
Robin Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 21, 1951. Williams had a fairly quiet childhood, and was actually a shy kid. It wasn’t until he started to become involved in his high school drama productions, that the genius of Robin Williams started to be shown. In 1973, Williams was invited to attend the Julliard School in New York where he studied performing arts.
Williams big break came when he was cast for an episode of Happy Days, where he played a character from outer space. His performance was widely applauded and from that came his own television series. Mork and Mindy, about an alien from the planet Ork, ran from 1978 to 1982. During the show Williams had the opportunity to use his outstanding improvisational skills to create one of the most memorable characters in TV history.
At the conclusion of the series, Robin Williams began taking his comedic talents to comedy clubs. Over his career he has had several comedy albums and television comedy specials. The routines gave Williams the chance to use his wide array of voices and improve skills, to outrageous results.
During the end of his Mork career, he started to work in movies. His first role was in 1980 as the spinach eating hero, Popeye. Over the course of the next 30 years, Williams has appeared in several memorable films including Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire and Goodwill Hunting. Younger movie goers will also know his work from his voice work in movies including Aladdin and Happy Feet.
Robin Williams has also been recognized for his outstanding work. During his career he has been nominated for the Golden Globe Awards, Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has won 3 Golden Globe Awards, 1 Screen Actors Guild Award and in 1996 won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Goodwill Hunting.
Williams has been an outstanding performer in the field of stand-up comedy, television and the movies.
