3rd Rock From The Sun
The phrase "3rd rock from the sun" refers to Earth, the 3rd planet from the sun, and the show 3rd Rock from the Sun was a TV series that followed a group of aliens trying to adapt to our planet.
The show had 139 episodes, which ran on NBC from January 1996 until April 2001, and starred John Lithgow, Kristen Johnston, French Stewart and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as aliens sent to Earth to observe the citizens. And, what better way to observe then to blend in as a normal Earth family (Solomon family). During their stay on Earth the family learned about dating, relationships, friendship, anger and all of the other emotions that humans go through.
The main characters of the show were:
Dick Solomon (Lithgow) - he is the commander of the visit, and head of the household. However, on his home planet, he is the youngest of the crew.
Sally Solomon (Johnston) - she is the 2nd in command for the mission and is learning how to be a woman.
Harry Solomon (Stewart) - he is the communicator of the mission and is in contact with "The Big Giant Head" on their home planet.
Tommy Solomon (Gordon-Levitt) - he is the youngest on Earth, but the oldest and wisest of the aliens.
Other characters on the show were Dr Mary Albright who works with Dick and is his girlfriend, Nina Campbell who works for Dick, Mrs. Dubcek who is the landlady and Officer Don who is a local police officer and is Sally's boyfriend.
The plot of the show was fairly simple, in following the exploits of the family on Earth. While on Earth the family lives in an apartment owned by Mrs. Dubcek. Dick works as a Professor at a University, Tommy goes to school and Sally and Harry learn about the culture of the planet. For more plot summaries, click the following links:

The show gave viewers an opportunity to see what life is like to a true outsider. During the run of the show, 3rd Rock and many of the actors in the series were recognized for their outstanding performances by winning Emmy Awards.
