Beverly Hillbillies Resource Guide

Listen to this story about a guy named Jed…Clampett of course! He’s a poor mountain man from the hills of Tennessee who struck it rich and moved to different hills – Beverly Hills, California that is! That was the simple premise behind the 1960’s sitcom hit “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

The Beverly Hillbillies started its run on CBS on September 26, 1962, and it became one of the most popular comedies in the history of network television. The plot of the show was fairly simple. It revolved around a widower named Jed Clampett with a pretty young, tomboy daughter, who lived in Tennessee, and one day while hunting, fired his shotgun and struck oil. Overnight, Jed was a millionaire, and with his daughter, Ellie May, slow witted nephew Jethro and mother-in-law called “Granny”, they packed up an old truck and moved to a mansion in Beverly Hills. The result was a show that had plenty of sight gags and jokes involving the Clampett family trying to fit in, into upscale Beverly Hills.

The Beverly Hillbillies became a success for the network. For seven years, the show ranked in the top ten overall for television programs, and twice ranked as number one overall. The success of the show sparked interest from the network to develop other rural television shows. From the Beverly Hillbillies, the network created Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. In addition, the rural themed variety show Hee Haw became a hit during this time period.

The cast of the show featured several veteran performers. Dancer/Actor Buddy Ebsen was featured as Jed Clampett, Irene Ryan was cast as Granny; Donna Douglas was selected as Ellie May and Max Baer Jr. was chosen to play 6th grade educated Jethro. To help the Clampett family become acclimated to southern California, Bank President, and next door neighbor, Millburn Drysdale (played by Raymond Bailey) and his secretary Jane Hathaway (played by Nancy Culp) watched over the family and made sure they learned the way to live in Beverly Hills.

At the beginning of each show was the theme song. It was performed by country/bluegrass performers Flatt and Scruggs, and was called “The Ballad of Jed Clampett.” The lyrics of the theme song, told the story of Jed Clampett in about 30 seconds. At the end of the show the theme was reprised with a thank you for watching and to have “y’all come back.” The theme was a quaint song which captured the essence of the series, and was a commercial success on the country music charts.

The series ran for 9 seasons with the last regular episode airing on March 23, 1971. During it's prime, The Beverly Hillbillies was the one show that viewers made sure they had tv repair service complete before the show aired. Overall, the show had a total of 274 episodes (106 in black and white and 168 broadcast in color). Since then it has been a regular fixture in reruns on several cable television stations. Here are additional resources of the show:

The Beverly Hillbillies was one of the most successful comedies in the 60’s and its laid back brand of humor set the stage for other similar shows. The show’s simple premise was a perfect diversion for the unrest that the United States was going through during that era. Fortunately, the show can still be found on television for a new generation to enjoy.
