The Pope of Trash: All About John Waters

John Waters has been a writer and director of campy cult classics since the 1960s. Nicknamed the "Pope of Trash", "The Sultan of Sleaze," and "The Baron of Bad Taste," his films are known for their shock value and brashness through gore, gross depictions, and counterculture casts and themes. Most of his films feature a repeating cast of characters, including Divine, Edith Massey and Mary Vivian Pearce. His casts have also included convicted criminals like Patricia Hearst and some mainstream famous actors like Debbie Harry, Melanie Griffith and Sonny Bono.

Waters was born in Baltimore in 1946. As a child, he was obsessed with gore and violence, so much so that his favorite childhood memory was seeing real blood in a wrecked car. He started making 8mm and 16mm films and showed them in rented church halls in the 1960s. His first movie, Hag in a Black Leather Jacket, was shown only once at a coffee house. Other film from the 1960s and 1970s include:

  • Roman Candles
  • Eat Your Makeup

  • Desperate Living

Later, Waters films became more mainstream. They include

  • Cecil B. Demented
  • A Dirty Shame

The most well known Waters movie is Hairspray, which inspired the Broadway musical and was remade into a musical film in 2002.
