It's The Benny Hill Show!

Alfred Hawthorne Hill was one of Britain’s most popular comedians and star of one of the most memorable shows in British television history. Who is Alfred Hawthorne Hill you ask? The world knows him as his stage name – Benny Hill, and as the star of The Benny Hill Show.

Hill was born in Southampton England on January 24, 1924. When World War II broke out, Hill was drafted into the British Army as a mechanic. After the war, Benny Hill worked several different jobs such as a milkman, driver, drummer and as a bridge operator. Trying to find his niche, Hill even tried his had at tv repair in an effort to find a career that pleased him. However, the funnyman was looking to break into the entertainment business as a stage manager. Hill enjoyed the stage and entertainment, and decided to change his name from Alfred Hawthorne Hill to Benny Hill, as a tribute to his favorite comedian, Jack Benny.

As Benny Hill, he began to work in men’s clubs, dinners, nightclubs and in small theatres. In fact, one of his first big breaks was when he was selected to be straight man to comedian Reg Varney, beating out another actor looking to break into the business – Peter Sellers! In the 1950’s Hill began to work in television and radio, working on early versions of the Benny Hill Show.

In the 60’s and 70’s Hill began to appear in movies. During this time he appeared in nine movies in various roles. The movies included “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, “Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines”, and “The Italian Job.”

In 1969, Hill moved his show from BBC Television to Thames Television, where it remained until 1989. The show featured in an hour long show with a series of sketches ranging from musical numbers to parodies of famous people to bawdy sketches where Hill is chasing (then being chased by) scantily clad young ladies. The ending credits of each show featured the angry young ladies chasing Hill throughout the area to the Benny Hill Theme. Despite being criticized by the media for his depiction of women, the public enjoyed his antics and was a successful program for the 20 years it was on television. Since cancellation in 1989, the show has been a popular program in syndication throughout the world.

In the early 1990’s Benny Hill’s health began to deteriorate which kept him from his love of entertaining people. A heart condition was diagnosed and he was being treated for heart disease until his death on April 19, 1992 in London, England.
