There Can Be Only One - The Highlander Page
The Highlander franchise has become a cult classic around the world. Quote a line from the movie or series, and it’s a good bet someone will probably know where it came from, if not which character said it. Purist’s love the movies, while TV buffs like the series. Both have been merged together through time, and the story blends together.
The Highlander Movies
Highlander- Released in 1986, Stars Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Scotsman who finds out his is one of the Immortals, beings who are playing an ancient “game,” and trying to get to “the gathering,” so they can be the last Immortal standing. Immortals can only die by beheading. Connor goes through time playing the game until he is the last Immortal, winning the game
Highlander II-The Quickening, released in 1991, plays on the same theme as the first movie, only Connor, (Christopher Lambert) has saved the world from a depleted ozone layer, and finds out, not only is he not the last Immortal, he is not even from planet Earth!
Highlander III-The Sorcerer, released in 1994, has Connor, (Christopher Lambert), thinking he is again the only Immortal left, when oops, he missed one. This time the fight is personal.
Highlander IV-Endgame, released in 2000, merges the movies and the TV series together. Connor (Christopher Lambert), and Duncan MacLeod, (Adrian Paul), must join together to defeat the most powerful Immortal on Earth, who is out to destroy them.
Highlander V-The Source, released 2007 has Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul), looking for the source of immortality, only to awaken the Guardian, who protects the source from anything that tries to take it.
Highlander-The TV Series
The series ran from 1992-1998 and introduced us to Duncan MacLeod, played by Adrian Paul, an Immortal, who is part of “the gathering,” a fight between the last remaining Immortals on Earth, and saving lives all the while. We find out about the Watcher’s who record the history of the Immortals and the Hunter’s, who think all the Immortals are evil and need to be exterminated. There are colorful flashbacks to Duncan’s life, showing how the character made his friends, and his enemies. The plot is rich even if it does stretch the imagination.

Immortals
There are a great number of Immortals that are in both the movies and the series. The Immortals are a species here on Earth, unknown to most humans, and are playing a very ancient “Game” of killing one another by beheading, until there are just enough left to form “The Gathering”. The Gathering is a contest to see who will be the last one standing. There are good Immortals and Bad Immortals. They are fighting for a “Prize,” which is ever elusive.
Watchers and Hunters
The Watcher’s are a secret society that has watched since there have been Immortals. It was created by Ammaletu the Akkadian, after he saw Gilgamesh die and then become an Immortal. They record history and do not interfere with the “game.” They just don’t want history to be lost, and for the Immortals to be relegated to fairy tales. Each Immortal is assigned a watcher who records everything the Immortal does. Most Immortals are unaware of them. Hunter’s on the other hand are a splinter sect of the Watcher’s whose stated goal is to kill the Immortals, because some feel that to win the “prize’ is to take control of the world, which they feel belongs to humans alone, and some feel if they kill Immortals, they will become Immortal themselves.
