Doctors
Dr. Erik Strunck
Dr. Erik Strunck was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Ohio, near Cincinnati. He attended North Carolina State University, obtaining a BS in Animal Science in 1998. Dr. Strunck then attended Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors in 2003.
Dr. Strunck has been with the Care First team since graduating in 2003, spending time at the Oberlin, Glenwood, and Falls Pointe locations, before heading up the new hospital at Grace Park in Morrisville. This is actually his second stint with the group, as he did spend a couple of years as a kennel assistant during his undergraduate years at N.C. State.
Dr. Strunck is a Morrisville resident, and has a happy family at home. His wife, Amy, is also involved in the practice, and takes on administrative duties while not at home with their two children, Ella, age 4, and Elijah, age 1. They are also expecting a third child in July! Their house stays busy with two dogs: Jones, a Great Dane who just turned 1 year old, and Chester, a border collie mix, who is 9. Five cats rule the roost: Ripple (13), Munson (10), Cleo (8), Wiley (3), and Mosley (3).
Dr. Strunck’s main interests in veterinary medicine are surgery and ultrasonography. While not at work, he enjoys spending time with his family, watching sports, and visiting the North Carolina Mountains for some hiking. Dr. Strunck can be reached at estrunck@carefirstanimalhospital.com.
Dr. Elisa Sumakeris
Dr. Elisa Sumakeris is a native of San Francisco California, although she spent most of her childhood in North Carolina. She attended NC State University for her undergraduate work, obtaining a BS in Zoology in 1989. She then obtained her Masters Degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1993. She attended the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in the class of 1997.
Dr. Elisa has been a member of the Care First team for over 20 years, starting out answering the phones after hours and working in the kennels, and then working her way up through a variety of jobs at the practice. After veterinary school, and a brief stint as a large animal veterinarian in Chatham County, she returned to join Care First as a veterinarian in the fall of 1998.
Dr. Elisa has a very busy household that consists of her husband Joe, and 3 children – Kathryn, age 10; and Joanna and Lucas, both age 6. In addition, her family includes her Labradoodle Biscuit, her cockatiel Dink, chinchillas Roscoe and Cloud, Bella the hamster, and a tank of fish. She and her family live in Carpenter Village in Cary, and her children attend Sterling Montessori Charter School.
Dr. Elisa enjoys spending time with her family outdoors, especially swimming, camping, and boating at Jordan Lake. She also enjoys gardening, and spends her summer tending a large organic vegetable garden. At the practice, she particularly enjoys internal medicine, microbiology and infectious disease, and behavior. Dr. Elisa can be reached at drelisa@carefirstanimalhospital.com.
