Doctors
Monika Kaelble, DVM DACVECC - Medical Director
Dr. Kaelble (pronounced “cable”) attended veterinary school at U.C. Davis. After graduating from Davis, she
was selected for an internship at Purdue University. Upon completion, she relocated to San Diego and joined the Pet Emergency & Specialty Center (PESC) in 1993. Monika completed a residency program to become board-certified in emergency and critical care medicine in 2000 and currently serves as medical director of the emergency service. Dr. Kaelble enjoys the challenges and rewards of helping pets and their owners in a time of need.
Elena Vassilev, DVM, DACVECC
Dr. Vassilev earned her DVM degree at the University of Illinois. Upon graduation, she sought advanced training through a one-year private practice internship in Ventura, California. She then successfully completed a residency in emergency and critical care medicine at the Animal Medical Center in Texas. Elena joined the PESC in 2002 and became board certified in emergency and critical care medicine in 2005. She is passionate about providing excellence in state-of-the-art patient care.
Mike Serdy, BVSc, DACVS
Dr. Serdy is a native Australian and received his veterinary degree with first class honours from the University of Sydney in 1992. He worked for two years as a general practitioner in Australia before relocating to the United States where he completed an internship and surgical residency at U.C. Davis. In 1998, Mike joined the PESC. His advanced surgical training, research and international education have well prepared him to perform the most state-of-the-art surgical procedures. Mike will work with you and your family veterinarian to offer the highest level of surgical care for your pet.
Heather Streppa, DVM, MS, DACVS
Dr. Streppa graduated from Texas A&M receiving her doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1999. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Auburn University, a post-doctoral fellowship in orthopedics at the University of Georgia, and a master’s degree in biomedical science from the University of Missouri. Heather has also completed a residency and a clinical instructorship in small animal surgery at the University of Missouri. She joined the PESC in 2005 where her professional interests include orthopedic, minimally invasive and oncologic surgery. Heather will work
with you to provide your pet with compassionate care and the best
possible surgical outcome.
Joanne Shinozaki, DVM, DACVIM
Dr. Shinozaki completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Purdue University after earning her veterinary degree from the University of California, Davis in 1996. She then attended Washington State University where she completed her residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine along with a Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine. Joanne is the recipient of numerous awards for research and academic excellence. Her skills encompass all aspects of internal medicine including endoscopy and ultrasound. Joanne enjoys the chance each day to help pets with serious medical problems regain their quality of life.
Laura Riordan, DVM, DACVIM
Dr. Riordan received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine graduating in 2002. She then pursued an
internship at Florida Veterinary Specialists before entering a residency in small animal medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Laura is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. She joined the staff of the PESC in 2006, and her special interests include infectious and metabolic diseases. Dr. Riordan enjoys working with her referring veterinarians and their clients to achieve
the best possible outcome for her patients.
Todd R. Cecil, DVM, DABVP-Avian
Prior to attending veterinary school, Dr. Cecil worked as a zookeeper at the San Francisco Zoological Society where he developed a keen interest in exotic species. He graduated from veterinary school at U.C. Davis in 1994, with a focus on zoological medicine. Todd then completed an internship in avian/exotic animal medicine and surgery, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Mississippi State. After completion, Dr. Cecil returned to San Diego to practice avian and exotic medicine exclusively, joining the PESC in 2006. He is very active in local organizations that support the care, ownership and rescue of exotic pets and wildlife.
