Doctors
Dr Keith Nicol
Dr. Nicol is an Oregon Native born in Silverton and raised in Eugene. He gradated with a BS in Zoology from Oregon State University and completed his 2 year study for a Masters Degree in Parasitology. He graduated form The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1973.
In 1976 he open his first practice in Cottage Grove Oregon and practiced large and small animal medicine for 12 years. In November 1987 he purchased Sorrento Animal Hospital and moved to the new building in 1995.
Dr. Nicol's medical interest lie in helping the geriatric dog and cat live a quality of life as free from pain as possible by providing the latest technological advances in Veterinary Medicine. He is trained in Acupuncture, Cold laser Therapy, Pulse Signal Therapy (PST) and Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation. With the cold laser he can do acupuncture with out using needles to stimulate healing while helping to relieve pain. Pulse Signal Therapy treatment has been found to help with arthritic and joint pain by stimulating the natural regeneration of cartilage and connective tissue.
His outside interests include fly fishing, playing golf and watching the "Ducks" play sports. He also enjoys "The Blues" he does not sing very well but does enjoy playing them on his guitar and harmonica.
Dr. Lauren M. Smith, DVM
Dr. Lauren Smith joined the Sorrento Animal Hospital team full time in January 1999. She is very experienced in canine and feline medicine, surgery, emergency/trauma care, and clinic management. Dr. Smith also has a special interest in feline internal medicine and senior care. She is a Northwest native, born in Seattle and raised in Ellensburg, Washington.
She earned her Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Washington in 1987 and her DVM from Washington State University in 1991. After practicing in Seattle for 5 years, Dr. Smith and her family (husband Rick Walker and 5 cats) relocated to Portland. Dr Smith is an active member of the AVMA, OVMA, PVMA, as well as Portland and the American Association of Feline Practitioners. She also volunteers her surgical skills every year spaying and neutering for the feral cat coalition.
Since she and her husband arrived in Portland, there have been additional pets and some losses. They now have a total of 7 cats and two dogs, one named Woody (small brown lab and corgi mix) and the newest addition, Petey, a rat terrier.
Rick is a musical instrument repairman, fixing brass and woodwind instruments for local schools, music stores, and individuals. They both enjoy the live music scene in Portland, as well as gardening, landscaping, and decorating their home in Beaverton.
Dr. Justin M. Cates, DVM
Dr. Justin Cates joined our team in March of 2007. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee in 1997 and his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine form the University of Tennessee in 2001.
A Tennessee native, Dr. Cates was drawn to the Pacific Northwest by his love of the outdoors. Dr. Cates has been practicing in the Portland area since 2001.
Dr. Cates special interests include Dermatology, Geriatrics and Surgery.
He is an active member of the PVMA and AAHA. He is also an avid gardener and is a member of the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon. In his spare time, he enjoys home remodeling and gardening.
Dr. Cates recently adopted a French Bulldog named Ignatius (Iggy) (from "A confederacy of Dunces").
Dr. Frank Lassise
Dr. Lassise joined the Sorrento team in September 2008. He grew up in suburban Los Angeles (Torrance), and attended undergrad at UC Davis as an Animal Science major, graduating in 1996. Surgery has always been a special interest, along with orthopedics. In 2001 he completed a one-year surgical internship at Veterinary Specialists of Rochester, New York, which included both emergency and critical care rotations.
For the past 12 years he has worked in private practice in central coastal California (Santa Cruz), as a small animal general practitioner. Dr. Lassise has experience in a variety of practice types including a referral and specialty hospital where he assisted overnight medical rotations, and worked with specialists in internal medicine, oncology, and surgery. In August 2008 he relocated to the Beaverton area with his 2 dogs (Oakley a 7year old Beagle and Joey a goofy 2 year old Boston Terrier). The queen of the house however, is Bootsy Boo the hands down most snugly cat ever! Although he is the newest addition to Sorrento, Dr. Lassise has already proven to be valuable team member.
