- Pointer (England): An athletic dog, with speed and endurance, yet kind and gentle. Pointers range from 24-26 in. and 57 lb for females to 25-27 in. and 65 lb. for males. Coloration is white with black, liver, or orange.
- Chesapeake Bay Retriever (United States): A strong, muscular dog with a thick coat suitable for retrieving ducks from his native Chesapeake Bay. Ranging from 21-24 in. and 62 lb for females to 23-26 in. and 68 lb. for males, the Chesapeake is a large and solid dog. Coloration is brown, sedge, or red-gold.
- Golden Retriever (England): A generous, loving dog, suited to almost anything from retrieving to work as a guide dog to finding drugs and explosives. Size ranges from 20-23 in. and 65 lb for females to 22-24 in. and 75 lb for males. Coloration runs from cream to rich gold.
- Labrador Retriever (Canada): Multi-talented dog, often used as a guide dog for the blind, friendly and intelligent. Ranging in size from 21-22 in. and 63 lb for females to 22 in. and 67 lb for males, the Labrador Retriever is a solid, heavy dog. Coloration is black, chocolate, or yellow.

Hounds
- Basset Hound (France): A low, but heavy dog that is surprisingly steady over long distances, with a placid nature. Size ranges from 13 in. and 43 lb for females to 13-15 in. and 50 lb. for males. Coloration is varied, often red and white or black and tan.
- Beagle (England): A capable pack hunter, Beagles are accommodating in the kennel or the household, with short waterproof coats. Size ranges from 12-16 in. and 10-25 lb. Coloration is black and tan, red and white, lemon and white, orange and white, or tricolor.
- Greyhound (England): An ancient breed that is lean and muscular, affectionate and even-tempered. Height is 27-30 in. and weight is 60-65 lb for females and 65-70 lb for males. Coloration is black, gray, red, and fawn; they are solid, brindle, or spotted.
- Irish Wolfhound (Ireland): The largest breed of dog (though not the heaviest), but gentle and without menace. Size is 30 in. and 105 lb for females, and 32 in. and 120 lb for males. Coloration is gray, brindle, red, black, white, or fawn.
Terriers
- Airedale Terrier (England): The largest of the terrier group, the Airedale is the “king of the terriers,” a courageous guard dog. Weighing about 47 lb. and ranging from 22-23 in. for females to 23-24 in. for males, the Airedale is a medium-sized dog. Coloration is tan and black.
- Bull Terrier (England): An even-tempered but obstinate dog, with an egg-shaped head. He is stocky at 18 in. and 72 lb. Coloration is white with or without patches of red, black, or brindle on their heads, as well as black, red, fawn, or brindle.
- Wire Fox Terrier (England): Bred for rat-catching, the Fox Terrier is intelligent, though willful, and loves to dig. At 15 in. and 17 lb., the Fox Terrier is a small to medium dog. Coloration is white with black, red, or liver markings.

- Bernese Mountain Dog (Switzerland): An affable, intelligent, highly-trainable dog, who is a favorite for cart-pulling. Ranging in size from 23-26 in. and 70-100 lb for females and 25-27 in. and 90-120 lb for males, Bernese Mountain Dogs are large. Coloration is black with tan markings and white flashings.
- Border Collie (Scotland/England): Alert and very trainable, with a super-agile performance. Weight ranges from 30-45 lb, and height from 18-21 in. for females to 20-23 in. for males. Coloration is black, blue merle, and sable with white or tan markings.
- Boxer (Germany): A fearless guard who doesn’t start fights, but doesn’t back down. Size range is 21-23 in. and 55-59 lb for females to 22-25 in. and 66-70 lb for males. Coloration is fawn or brindle with or without white flashings and black mask.
- Doberman Pinscher (Germany): An elegant, energetic and powerful dog that was bred for police work. Size ranges from 25 in. and 73 lb for females to 27 in. and 83 lb for males. Coloration is black, red, blue, or fawn with tan markings.
- German Shepherd (Germany): An extremely trainable dog used as a sheep-herding dog, a guide dog for the blind, a police dog, and a drug dog, he has a steady temperament. Size ranges from 22-24 in. and 65 lb for females to 24-26 in. and 80 lb for males. Coloration is black, black and tan, sable, as well as white and cream.

- Dalmatian (Croatia): Used as a carriage dog and a fire dog, the Dalmatian is outgoing and friendly. Size ranges from 19-23 in. and 40-60 lb. Coloration is black or liver spots on a white background.
- Keeshond (Netherlands/Germany): A thoroughly trusting and cheerful dog who loves people. Size ranges from 16-18 in and 35 lb for females to 17-19 in. and 45 lb for males. Coloration is a mixture of gray, black, and cream.
- Poodles (Germany): An extremely intelligent dog capable of tricks and agility, with a coat that does not shed. Sizes are Standard, Miniature, and Toy, from 10 in. and 6-9 lb for Toys and 15-21 in. and 45-65 lb for Standards.
Toy Dogs
- Bichon Frise (Spain/Belgium): A stylish dog with a tail curled high over his back and fine, silky hair with corkscrew curls, he is extroverted and friendly. Size is 9-11 in. and 6-13 lb. Coloration is white, possibly with cream shadings.
- Chihuahua (Mexico): A high-spirited, intelligent dog with a loud bark, who is very brave. Size is 6-9 in. and 2-6 lb. Coloration is varied; fawn, cream, and black with tan markings are common. May be long or short-haired.
- Pomeranian (Germany/Poland): A very small dog with a lion-like mane of hair around his head. Size is 8-11 in. and 3-7 lb. Coloration is varied, but normally a solid color such as orange, black, or cream.
- Pug (China): A compact, sturdy dog with a tightly curled tail and short-nosed face. Size is 10-11 in. and 14-17 lb. Coloration is silver, apricot, or black with a black muzzle or mask.
- Yorkshire Terrier (England): A tiny dog with elegantly long hair that is alert and intelligent. Size is 8-9 in. and 7 lb. Coloration is blue and tan, though they are born black and tan.
