This month, we had the pleasure of hosting Carolyn Kylstra, Editor-in-Chief of SELF Magazine, for a Yext Talk. Organized by our women's group EMPOWER, Kylstra joined us as part of the company's celebration of Women's History Month.

An alumna from several popular healthcare magazines, Kylstra's career has focused on helping people — particularly women — feel better about themselves. This overarching goal was put into practice when she began leading SELF in 2016. In her role, Kylstra focuses the publication's brand on three main pillars: inclusivity, accuracy, and empathy.

During her time at SELF, Kylstra and her team have shifted the company's content strategy to reach more digital viewers, as well as to promote the growth of the company. Under Kylstra's leadership, SELF's social media presence has been so strong that the publication recently won an Ellie, an award that honors both print and digital publications that demonstrate superior execution of editorial objectives and much more.

In her professional leadership experience, Kylstra has helped form SELF to be a much more diverse and inclusive environment.

When asked about work-life balance, Kylstra discussed the importance of her team understanding their personal needs and feeling comfortable voicing them in the workplace. And as a new working mom, Kylstra personally emphasizes sleep — and lots of it!

Accompanying Kylstra's discussion, EMPOWER had snacks on hand from female-founded companies, including GoMacro bars and Seattle Chocolates
